This is not enough to feed children. At Gingerbread, we know 1 in 3 single parents have a child on #FreeSchoolMeals ( #FSM) – #children in #singleparentfamilies are 2x as likely to be on FSM. Apparently, these children can be fed for a week with a few apples & a tin of beans. 1/4 https://twitter.com/MarcusRashford/status/1348736192729251854
Previous #research has shown #singleparents (=more likely to be in poverty than any other UK household), are brilliant at making every £ stretch – because they need to be. There is no doubt that if they had the money rather than #foodparcels, their child would be less hungry. 2/4
Throughout the #COVID19 #pandemic, single parents have had to be the sole teacher, earner, #parent and playmate all at the same time. Somehow, their job has just become much, much harder. #Hungrychildren cannot learn. 3/4
We are, therefore, calling on the #government to give parents money rather than parcels & to combat #FoodPoverty in the long term by maintaining the £20 uplift to #UniversalCredit ( #UC) & lifting #ChildBenefit for a #HungerFreeFuture. 4/4
