Let’s talk about “minarchists” for a minute. How come it’s considered “right wing” to support lesser government with a very specific set of rules? Like, plenty of liberals want a smaller state in general but still believe in social services. (Thread)
Usually when talking about libertarians I think of anarchists, but is there a place in the liberty movement for left wing minarchists?
If you say no, I think, either you’re an anarchist or a hypocrite. Because so many are perfectly fine with a minimal state so long as it supports or does not support *their* values. Whether it’s keeping around the police, or infrastructure of that nature, it’s still a bias.
If you have a narrow definition of libertarianism, the obvious answer is no. Except I think thin libertarianism is a joke. There is libertarian schools of thought based on property rights and the NAP - but not ALL libertarian schools of thought. It’s a spectrum of ideologies.
And within that spectrum, surely there are people who are generally anti authoritarian but believe in things like UBI or... not abolishing welfare, lol. I’ve touched on this hypocrisy before, but it baffles me as to why the movement is so unaccepting of such people.
Especially when there is so many of them that could help make us more free in so many areas. How does one choose which government policies are more or less statist? I’d say it really just comes down to personal bias. And the narrative always comes from right libertarians.
If we follow the political compass, and we truly had a party with both the libertarian left and libertarian right, either full quadrant or bottom half, it would be a powerhouse. And I suspect that there are MANY folks in the Democrat and Republican parties that SHOULD join the LP.
I’m a radical so I’m weary of a big tent that comes to mean compromising on our values. But the LP needs to make a decision on which direction it’s going to go or it needs to split up into different parties (which I think is dumb). Factioning isn’t bad, but intent DOES matter.
(For reference)
This is certainly not entirely accurate according to some people, but I feel as though the labels help guide people somewhat. Where do we draw the lines? Right now the LP covers most of the bottom right except for a few IMO (social liberalism?). Don’t mind the ones outside...🤦‍♀️
Right now, even bleeding heart libertarians (which would be right wing but to the left of the right), are considered leftists to some of the moronic libertarians I come across on this app. They want it to be paleos, ancaps, and that’s about it.
Meanwhile, even classical liberalism has a different perspective of property rights than what is envisioned by ancapistan. Not everyone is willing to discuss philosophy for hours to overcome our differences. But I feel like this needs to be a discussion.
The “justly acquired property” portions of the LP became forgotten...

The left + right alliance became forgotten.

Some of the original factions were pushed out and forgotten.

Maybe it’s time for a new Dallas Accord ordeal?
