Today sees the publication of the final report of the #GreenInnovation Policy Commission which I helped support whilst at @UCLPublicPolicy

The report is packed with recommendations from businesses to government, but I'm going to pull out three I think are most powerful... /1
Takeaway 1 - The UK is already an innovation powerhouse but is failing to translate this into solutions, to make this work policy has to focus not just on supply but on *generating demand* for innovations /2
🔬⚗️📈
The innovation system is complex but its clear that market-shaping policies to aid adoption of tech, secure prices, and guide investment are essential

These policies helped offshore wind prices plummet over the past decade, now lets do it for *all* green innovation /3
Takeaway 2 - businesses recognise that *more* regulation, not less, is needed to make green innovation profitable

Regulations help protect green products and businesses moving towards net-zero from being undercut, and they help guide sectors in the right direction
/4
As the government eyes the opportunities for post-Brexit standards and regulatory divergence, the message here from the most pioneering, innovative firms in the UK is clear:

They want to see *more regulations* to drive the UK innovation economy
/5
Takeaway 3 - An innovation policy with a focus on purely R&D is insufficient, we need to worry about adoption and diffusion too

The Cummings-era uplifts in R&D investment is absolutely vital but it cannot be focussed on just lab-scale, fundamental research
/6
Government policy here needs to be lined up if we want to reap the economic benefits of the UKs strength in innovation

Forthcoming industrial strategy need to focus on existing innovations like building retrofit, not on hot new tech like direct-capture of CO2

Take a look at the GIPC report to read more, there are great examples of innovations that aren't happening because business and government aren't lined up: https://www.ucl.ac.uk/bartlett/sustainable/sites/bartlett/files/the_commissions_final_report.pdf

Also, @GreenAllianceUK have put together a brilliant short summary report for policymakers that pulls all these ideas together too: https://bit.ly/35h4x9C
