£30 supermarket vouchers would have been better in this instance. Hoped I wouldn't be saying this, as providing nutritionally balanced #FreeSchoolMeals whilst schools are closed is absolutely possible - as @ChefsinSchools and @sfmtweet are showing in South London. Our ( @ImpUrbanHealth) report shines a light on the current state of the school food system in England - in short it isn't currently set up to prioritise children's health or their nutritional needs. Cost is king and poor quality food is far too prevalent: https://urbanhealth.org.uk/insights/reports/serving-up-childrens-healthrecent
So, what we currently see are the symptoms of a broken system playing out in practice, publicly. It will only be remedied when all actors in the system step up & play their part. Starting with national government, e.g. they set procurement guidelines that are ripe for improvement
School caterers could also do MUCH better. There are examples of caterers and schools using innovative techniques to make healthy food options the most affordable and tasty. However, the system doesn’t incentivise this kind of practice, so it is the exception not the rule.
I believe that Local Authorities can have a transformative role to play in ensuring nutritious school food is the norm in their local place. They can support schools & caterers to adequately fulfil their responsibilities when it comes to meeting the School Food Standards.
