1⃣ Good questions from @Peters_Glen. Back in 2006, when in charge of a number of studies critical of then popular policies to support biofuels, I got into a tiff with the head of a very influential U.S.-based NGO that was very pro biofuels.

"Biofuels will perpetuate ... " https://twitter.com/Peters_Glen/status/1348906521158176771
2⃣ "... the era of the internal combustion engine", I argued. "They enable the industry to just keep producing the same types of vehicles, at little added cost. By supporting biofuels, you are delaying the transition to non-ICE vehicles."
3⃣ Needless to say, the NGO president scoffed derisively, and feigned outrage -- OUTRAGE! -- that I would dare make that sort of accusation.

P.S., That president is long gone, and the NGO ceased operations four years ago.
4⃣ For those who still see a future for "sustainable biofuels", I would point out that the theory pushed 15 years ago was that crop-based biofuels would serve as a temporary bridge to some bright future powered by biofuels made from waste biomass.
5⃣ Rather, what has happened is that a small amount of less unsustainable feedstocks have been used to produce biofuels, ADDING to the that still produced from edible crops or crop oils, production of which has more than doubled since 2007-09 in the case of biodiesel:
