In 2019 I resigned my post as Head of Middlesbrough Town Hall at MBC. I resigned as a direct result of the Mayor of Middlesbrough insisting that the Town Hall (which I had responsibility for programming) book Roy Chubby Brown. @JolyonMaugham
This was despite the previous Mayor and the Chief Exec of Middlesbrough agreeing that we should not programme him because of the misogynist, racist, homophobic content of his act.
When it became public knowledge that I had resigned because of this decision, the Mayor of Middlesbrough made public statements and did interviews with the media. He talked of ‘a member of staff’, and the chief exec talked of ‘one individual employee’, thereby identifying me.
These actions and rhetoric led to me and my family receiving threats of sexual violence and violence which went on for weeks (You deserve to die and I’ll be watching you) which led to 2 police investigations. Every time the Mayor made statements or talked to the media,
I received a frenzy of vitriol: One comment read ‘who’s this kiddy fiddler’, others that I should be shot in the head, should kill myself, and many others calling me a ‘twat’ a ‘split arse’ or ‘cunt’. I was called a ‘daft bitch’, to ‘go and ride a bag of dicks’, to
‘fuck right off’, ‘Fulton is vermin’, ‘a scourge of society’, that ‘she should quit life altogether’, a ‘snob’, a ‘fascist’, a ‘snowflake fuck’, an ‘upper class snob’, ‘let the cunt walk’ and ‘stupid bitch… good job she’s gone’.
The mayor talked of this being a decision of the ‘cultural elite’ and of the ‘slightly posh’ and of ‘not understanding blue collar workers’.
I am from a working class family from Glasgow (my dad is a joiner). Never have I been called posh (or slightly posh), or part of 'the cultural elite'.
Throughout all of this, neither the Mayor nor the Chief Exec of MBC spoke to me about any of this, or about Roy Chubby Brown.
