Add restaurant critic @philvettel to the list of @chicagotribune legends packing up from the soon-to-be-vacated building. Phil was an editor in the Friday section when I started writing a local music column there, and I thought, man, what a good guy. I wasn't wrong. (1/4)
For 31 years he has been a must read for anyone who cares about food in Chicago. Like Roger Ebert, Phil writes with deep knowledge while coming across as a friend sharing his thoughts with you. He makes you experience the meals he's describing, and you want to join him. (2/4)
I'll always be grateful that one day, when I was smarting over a fine-dining-related piece being killed for no reason, Phil told me that Charlie Trotter had quit serving foie gras, so maybe I could get a story out of that. I did and then some, and Phil was happy for me. (3/4)
He celebrated others' successes rather than viewing journalism as a zero sum game. Now I'm happy for him for taking a big, positive step, but I'm not happy that I won't be able to read him in the Trib anymore. Enjoy, Phil, and eat something decent to celebrate. (4/4)
