I’m FUMING. A law student called me to discuss a firm interview. The firm took her to lunch and, after everyone was seated, a lawyer said: “We don’t normally interview Black candidates, but your record was strong.” He thought it was a compliment. She was appalled. DO NOT DO THIS.
This was last year. Because this student is mature and professional, she sat through the lunch until it was over. She asked me if she’ll constantly have to worry about people questioning her worth. It broke me, but I was honest and told her the profession needs her and I do, too.
Only 2% of lawyers are Black women. TWO. I am now her mentor. She didn’t tell me the name of the lawyer or firm, but if I happen to find out, there WILL BE a conversation. They will not make another student feel less than, undesirable, and undeserving—not as long as I’m here.
