gps metadata of 68k videos uploaded to parler
some parler users uploaded videos from US military bases. and one near the googleplex.
normalized by county thanks to @PeterCBlack https://twitter.com/PeterCBlack/status/1348859919445807106?s=20
here is an interactive map for all the geocoded parler videos. you can look into specific cities and countries, and check timestamps and video ids https://kylemcdonald.net/parler/map/
you can see people moving from the white house (bottom) to the capitol (top), if you plot the video metadata with time on the x axis and longitude on the y axis. it looks like almost every second is covered from at least one angle.
1200+ videos uploaded to parler in the DC area on 1/6
wasn’t glenn the guy on backup vocals for poitras and snowden? really taking a new direction for his sophomore album. https://twitter.com/ggreenwald/status/1348619731734028293
there are around 14,000 parler videos that include personal computer usernames in the video metadata. these videos are typically edited with adobe products. (i replaced identifiable names with asterisks.)
giant 9000x8000 pixel image (42MB) containing the first frame of every public video uploaded to parler from noon-8pm EST on the 6th *that was not geocoded*. the might be evidence in here that has slipped through the cracks http://kylemcdonald.net/parler/2021-1-6-noon-to-8pm-EST.jpg
i just matched 250+ geocoded parler videos from the 6th to names, usernames, and text posts https://kylemcdonald.net/parler/map/
i also randomized the positions by ±0.00005°, because i noticed that the GPS resolution limit of EXIF data was forcing multiple videos to overlap. so, a reminder: GPS locations are not as accurate as the dot is small.
apparently parler had a reply-by-email feature that automatically inserted your email address into the text 🤔 some redacted samples from 1/6
great work from @propublica they have 310 non-geocoded videos in here, which means they must have sifted through a lot of the timestamped files to find relevant videos. for anyone working on IDing, consider this a resource of "new" footage https://projects.propublica.org/parler-capitol-videos/
i built a face recognition system for all the images on parler, and can now confidently report: they really loved their braveheart memes
face recognition from livestreams running against the parler image database finds jessica watkins & bobby pickles. but fails on many more, including everyone currently unidentified. a great reminder that tech won't save us.
i like face recognition. it's helpful for cultural heritage work, and searching my photos for friends. and: it should be banned in most cases. it's nice that it might help us fight fascism in this moment, but that doesn't justify future use.
i feel like i needed to say this more clearly, because i've got surveillance companies in my DMs right now, asking if i can help them feed footage from the 6th to their skynet-style software 🙄
