A couple of months back I was listening to a podcast where a pen-tester spoke about her childhood and how once she snuck into the local zoo at night to see the lions. Later I shared this story with my daughter (8) who immediately wanted to listen to that part of the podcast. 1/9
So we listened and my daughter was completely absorbed by this story and demanded to listen to the rest of the podcast. So we listened to the podcast together and my daughter became completely fascinated by the profession of pen testing. 2/9
At my daughter's insistence we played a game where I pretended I was an executive who left documents on his desk and she was a pen tester whose mission it was to sneak in and photograph said documents without being caught. We did this for about an hour. 3/9
Afterwards I tweeted about this experience and tagged the podcaster. https://twitter.com/bigkamo/status/1330128141319360514 4/9
He then tagged his guest, Jenny Radcliffe, bringing it to her attention. She then sent me a private message saying how lovely it was to hear about my daughter's story and how she has the makings of an "awesome social engineer". 5/9
Jenny also offered to speak with my daughter in a video call. So I told my daughter about Jenny's generous offer and, as expected, she was extremely excited to speak with the woman who had snuck into the zoo at night. 6/9
Time got the best of us but just after New Year I got back in touch with Jenny and we set a date to catch up online. My daughter and I listened to parts of the podcast again and she formulated a list of questions for Jenny. She was really excited. 7/9
So on Friday night we got in front of my laptop and sat virtually face-to-face with @Jenny_Radcliffe for 20 or so minutes talking about the People Hacker's adventurous childhood and career. Jenny's generosity and thoughtfulness meant so much to my daughter 8/9
and I wanted to thank her publicly for taking the time and effort to reach out and connect with us. My daughter had so many follow-up questions after originally hearing the podcast that she was able to put directly to Jenny and this meant so much to her. Thank you Jenny! 9/9
Update: @Jenny_Radcliffe also very kindly sent my daughter a t-shirt from her hometown of Liverpool. My daughter proudly slept in it last night. Thank you Jenny!
