No one wants a simply partisan removal vote, but even with 5 or 10 Republicans, it must be done. Removal requires 2/3 of those present. It can be done with fewer than 100 Senators. Cowardly Rs too scared to vote either way can hide at home. Even if it's unsuccessful, vote. https://twitter.com/FrankLuntz/status/1348683569523089408
It is astounding that both parties and both branches (esp the House) have been so reluctant to move on impeach/rem. I'm often critical of Congress delegating authority to the executive. It's unbelievable that this physical assault on Cong was met with "We hope the VP calls back."
No one wants to further divide the country. But there are divisions and they will be present no matter the course. Both today and for history we need an on-the-record accounting of where people stand on the lies and the mob violence. Impeachment and removal are political acts.
Look at the words of Hamilton (on his birthday!) in Fed. 65. This would be a political process. Legal issues aside for the moment, there has been a violation of public trust and there are injuries to society.
Hamilton thought the Senate was the best place to put the removal power in part because it "would be likely to feel confidence enough in its own situation" to be an impartial judge. Where is the Senate's confidence? Where is its ambition? Madison weeps. https://avalon.law.yale.edu/18th_century/fed65.asp
