I'm revamping the Design of Cities class I taught nearly a decade ago - and I want to center the entire class around equity, justice, and inclusiveness. I'm not sure there's an appropriate textbook for this. Any advice on readers?
I have to cover the history of urban design...the evolution, if you will. I usually start around the industrial revolution to current day and consider topics around public space, street layouts, transportation/infrastructure, urban design (of course), land use planning, zoning...
but want to go heavy into the human part of the design and behavior equation, and cover issues of racial justice, feminism, "otherness" as well as provide much more nuanced understanding of role of the auto and how that differed/s based on race, ethnicity, income, ability, etc.
and of course, focus heavily on the role of public space - to include v exclude, judge v honor, welcome v rebuke, facilitate discourse v endanger...etc.
Want 2 heed wisdom from rockstars @TamikaButler @Bici_Urbana @SmartGrowthCEO @Jay_Pitter @mslynnross @mitchell_silver @DrDesThePlanner @JamesRojas @gulatinidhi @transitchampion @ULOCNetwork What would you've wanted to learn in planning school that you didn't? (pls see above) thx!
