I have come to realise that what many of us class as non-essential in the midst of this #pandemic is very much based on #ableist assumptions. There's too much for a single tweet, so here's a short thread with some examples:
1. Coffee shops and pubs are some of the few places with disabled/radar key toilets. I don't know about you, but I'd argue that toilets are pretty necessary. Not all of us have the luxury of being able to 'hold it'.
2. Click and collect for clothing and other items. Some argue it's easier to get things delivered directly to your door, but what if you have to get down three flights of stairs with a mobility impairment? C&C allows for unplanned disruptions to a disabled person's day / journey.
3. Electronics shops. Many disabled people rely on certain technology to help them hit goals at work. Not only click & collect, but some may require in-person guidance and need to physically experience the product they're buying, to make sure it's suitable (think sensory issues).
4. Homeware shops. Like the previous tweet, people need to experience in person what they're buying beforehand This is the case for everyone, but *especially* for those with disabilities, regardless of whether or not they're working from home. A bed is essential, that's a given.
5. Gyms (part 1) If you're able-bodied, exercising outside is a lot more feasible. With icy floors, cold weather, changing levels of visibility, uneven surfaces, and much more, this isn't always safe for disabled people. Gyms are specifically designed for higher levels of safety.
6. Gyms (part 2) As somebody with Tourette's, I'd be wary working with free weights at home. Gyms + the staff they have on hand, offer another layer of safety to working out. Ticced and threw the weight on your foot? A first-aid trained member of staff will be on hand to help!
7. Places of worship. So many services such as AlAnon, foodbanks, refuge, respite care, etc operate out of places of worship. Disabled people are more likely to require these services in many instances. We are more likely to live in poverty + our government doesn't care. PoW do!
8. I could go on, but I'll spare you the long read. In short, please ensure that you're checking your able-bodied privilege when spouting off about what is and is not essential in the midst of this pandemic.
