Saw @Dan722J tweet about Trump being a Gracchi and thought I would look at Parenti's book on Julius Caesar for parallels
Tiberius Gracchus was a populari who wanted to change this. He was denounced by the Senate as a demagouge who wanted to be king. Eventually executed. Same thing happens to his brother Gaius
Now the interesting thing about this book is that Parenti makes the case that the famous Catiline Conspiracy was a Cicero psyop. Catiline, a debt-ridden initially failed politician who turned populist, is accused of wanting to destroy Rome and "besiege the Senate House"
On many facts about the Catiline Conspiracy, Cicero is our only source. But most historians agree with the case, largely as Cicero described it (there are some who disagree)
I'm thinking that Trump might ultimately end up a Catiline. Forever known to history as a "threat to the Republic" who is branded as such because he came up against an establishment that simply outsmarted him
