Tough discussion w/ someone today prompted this Rule of Law 101--which I believe we must teach students and each other. First, the phrase "no person is above the law" means that no person gets to decide for themselves what is right or wrong under the law. We follow process. 1/x
Thus, we might believe a person is wrongfully convicted, but none of us has a right to interrupt the court or break the person out of prison—no matter how egregious we might think the situation. This is the rule of law we accept as a foundation that protects us all. 2/x
So Trump has right to feel cheated & pursue litigation, but neither he nor anyone else has right to go beyond than that. So what he & others say about election is irrelevant to Jan 6. The process determined a winner, & courts & legislators found his arguments lacked merit. 3/x
That is the end of the story in a country governed by law, not individuals. That is the simple truth we must dispassionately teach to young people trying to find their way, and also spread to those who might disagree about or be misled by details that just don't matter. 4/4
