I am sure most of us are aware that our country is undergoing an educational reform starting from our Colleges of Education down to the Basic Level of Education. The focus of this post is to throw more light on the Basic level reforms. Basically reforms involve
a massive change in all aspect of a sector and in education a change in curriculum is mostly the driving force of our reforms. Previously we were running an objective based type of curriculum which most stakeholders complained that it was bookish does not abide in students
the necessary 21st century industrial skills and competence. This calls have led to the development of the standards based curriculum that is supposed to bridge these gaps our previous curriculum was creating. So we are now going to run a Standard Based Curriculum.
Personally I love the idea of change and from my reading of the curriculum framework and the merits of the Standard Based Curriculum I believe if “implemented” we could see a significant improvement in our society. This SBC has seen the introduction of new course/subjects and
a lot of changes in the content to be taught. Most importantly most of the activities will be learner centered (students will do more) to ensure they develop the necessary performance skills.

The Diploma could help graduates at least get some jobs or internships if they don’t even want to go into the University. This tells us one thing. If you have a diploma certificate you will need to run for an upgrade else you will soon be on the same level as an SHS graduate.
I can not over emphasize this. We can create all the lofty system and standards but if we do not see to proper implementation by providing the available resources we will be back to where we started from. Again this reforms will need the help of each and every one of us. Teachers
can always do their best but we will need to support them in the process of implementation.
