This isn’t confirmed reporting, just me putting together the pieces from today’s waiver news and #Canucks
practice to work through and model Vancouver’s opening day roster.
I expect the #Canucks
to submit an opening day roster with 21 active players on it (12 F, 7 D, 2 G). 1/1

I expect the #Canucks

In addition to those players, I’d expect #Canucks
to enter the season with Hawryluk and Ferland on some variation of IR or LTI.
Travis Green declined to update Hawryluk’s status on Monday, but he wasn’t on waivers so he’s either hurt or on the team. Former is more likely. (2)

Most notable omission from that list of active skaters? Nils Hoglander.
Hoglander’s $890k cap hit will become a $1.1 million cap hit if he doesn’t begin the season on the 23-man roster.
We’ll come back to this in a bit, because that’s actually a feature not a bug for VAN. (3)

To make it work as I’ve modeled it #Canucks
need to place Hawryluk in offseason LTI. You’d prefer to avoid it, but it’s necessary.
My model would put the Canucks just $9k short of the $81.5 million upper limit. Ferland’s space will be captured after the 23-man roster is set. (4)

Place Ferland on LTI, capture almost his entire $3.5 million cap hit.
With that space you can exceed the cap to recall Hoglander at $1.1 million and sign Travis Hamonic prior to puck drop on Wednesday.
We’ll see how the club opts to proceed, but that’s what I now expect. (5)

Last thing on Hoglander at $1.1 million: #Canucks
will be in LTI all season meaning any performance bonuses hit will be paid as a cap overage in 2021-22.
Except if Hoglander is at $1.1M then his cap hit will match his bonus payments at season end if he hits them: no overage. (6)

And I also projected the opening night lineup, which in contrast with the opening day roster, I expect will include Hoglander and Hamonic: https://theathletic.com/2314911/2021/01/11/projecting-canucks-opening-day-lineup/?source=emp_shared_article

Basically what I modeled in this thread, with Chatfield cast as the $700k league minimum player.
This #Canucks
hockey operations group has taken a lot of flack over cap allocation, lots of it fair, but it should be noted that this an elegant solution to a complicated problem: https://twitter.com/capfriendly/status/1348707340371939329
