Tech platforms banning Trump or Parler does not in any way "give" new powers to Big Tech. They had these powers all along. They've always been able to do whatever they want.
If you're concerned about their unaccountable power, the problem is in private property, not banning fash
If you're concerned about their unaccountable power, the problem is in private property, not banning fash
Big Tech being able to ban Trump and other fash elements is not a *cause* of increased Tech power over our society, it is an *effect*. And, in this instance, once of the rare good effects, a pleasant byproduct of a generally bad situation
The problem of our communication infrastructure resting in private hands is not new. Before there was social media, the problem was just as acute--if not moreso--with TV, films, and print media.
The only solution, the only way to actually reduce the power of these entities over our lives is to 1) regulate them with the force of law, but this is a half-measure. The real solution is 2) put all communication infrastructure in public hands
Only if our communications rest in public hands can they be democratically accountable. Short of that, take this as a win. So one sector of the ruling elite fucked over another sector. Great, not my problem.
Again, there is no MATERIAL ANALYSIS by which this enhanced the power of Big Tech. The policies they changed? They wrote those policies in the first place! They always had the power to do this, they simply chose not to because it was not profitable to do so.
Corporations *using* the power they always had, in slightly different ways, does not change the fundamental structure of society or their level of influence. This does not set a "precedent" for cracking down on the left, something they already did anyway
What you really mean by "precedent" is "social norms" which are not actual, real, material power. They're niceties, and they can be disposed of at any time. Trying to resist capital with social norms is folly. It's liberalism.
Any leftist who decries the "precedent" of Big Tech banning Trump is no different from a Democrat whining about the lack of decorum in the Senate. It's lib shit. It's not materialism, it's not a real analysis of political economy. It's delusion
It's very bad that communication rests overwhelmingly in private hands. This event, however, does not change that for better or for worse. The problem remains entirely the same. If you think this mattered to the fundamental issue, you're being led like a bull by a matador
You're watching the dancing red cape but not the sword they have ready to plunge into you--the sword of private property. Don't be fooled. They want you to charge the cape, and ignore the person wielding it and the weapon they have behind their backs.
