The insurrection was caused by more than the post-election lies of Trump et al. It is the result of a growing political cancer. We need a comprehensive response to ensure this never happens again. 1. Trump must be impeached and removed. It's an open and shut case. Any member that votes against is putting their narrow partisan interest over their oath of office. https://messagebox.substack.com/p/a-proportionate-response-to-the-capitol
2. A shortened impeachment process cannot replace a thorough accounting of the Trump years. Every crime and abuse of power from 1/20/17 led to this moment. If we don’t ever know the full extent of what exactly happened, we can’t prevent something like this from happening again. 3. Josh Hawley, Ted Cruz and the others that incited the mob in an effort to overturn the election results must be censured. 4. We need a grassroots campaign to call out the corporations and others that fund the campaigns of the members that voted to overturn the election AFTER an armed mob tried to do hard to their colleagues. https://messagebox.substack.com/p/a-proportionate-response-to-the-capitol
5. We have two problems: a minority of our citizens are being radicalized with conspiracy theories/racially divisive rhetoric and that minority has a massively disproportionate share of political power, which is why we need a bold democracy reform agenda https://messagebox.substack.com/p/a-proportionate-response-to-the-capitol
There is a deep desire to turn the page on this chapter in American history. But unity and accountability are not opposite sides of the same coin. Turning the other cheek will not help us heal the soul of the nation.
