This is misleading in two ways. First, you can’t fully or even adequately equip Christians without gathering them, and well-equipped Christians will, by nature and by inexorable longing, gather with other Christians. (1/2)
Second, how does this sound if we render the Greek very literally? “In the future, gatherings that equip Christians will eclipse gatherings that gather them.” Yes, I agree that “church” is more than physical assembly. But it is not and cannot be less.
These sorts of overly simplistic platitudes actually damage the unity of the body of Christ, because they pit ideas against one another (gathering, equipping) that should not be separated—and implicitly pass judgment on Christians who don’t accept the dichotomies.
