It was, of all things, an Allstate commercial that helped crystalize and clarify something very important for me. (Yeah, I know. But go with me for a little.)
The ad was this one. I'm sure you've seen it.
Cute enough spot, right? But the part that was a breakthrough for me was this.
In order to cover their own asses, an insurance company felt the need to warn people not to drive their lunar rover off a moon cliff.
That is where we are, intellectually, as a society. We can't be trusted not to do obvious lunacy. It is assumed that the level of critical thinking is just that low.
So even though it is so clear that Trump has been lying to America about almost everything for over 40 years, 70 million people fell prey to those lies. Even after the insurrection, a full 40% of Republicans are still on board.
We are still a people who need to be warned not to speed off a cliff.
And until IQs rise sharply in the near future and America at large regains the capacity for critical thought, the next demagogue who lies with even a little more grace than Trump won't have to try to steal a country. We'll just give it to him, gladly.
UPDATE: Believe it or not, @Allstate pulled the ad from Youtube, to replace it with this, which doesn't have the "Do not attempt" warning:
But it was there. Do you think they edited the video because I pointed this out? Can't be...right?
