I have a lot of thoughts about Bridgerton. the SA was reprehensible, and many smart ppl have broken That all down. but the thing I keep coming back to over and over again is how truly fucking awful the Marina storyline was.
The racial politics of it are flat out horrifying. Her teeth being checked by that terrible old white man. Her getting slapped in the face by Lady Featherington. The slut-shaming.
And I think that it's telling, in ways that might be interesting to unpack, that it's the one storyline created out of whole cloth by tv writers, as opposed to coming from the source material. Which regardless of your opinion of the books, they are classic romance in execution.
Because her treatment, the way it plays out, the unforgivable betrayal by Penelope--who has a far more established friendship with Marina than an actual relationship with Colin -- it's the most anti-romance part of the series.
Marina got the evil ex-girlfriend treatment instead of the leading lady treatment, and I was expecting the shitty, awful SA storyline with Daphne and Simon. But this? It's really sitting with me.
