Alright. Not doing a scheme breakdown this week.
But let’s look at a play that seems to be very misunderstood, shall we? As always, video and diagram in thread below. Excuse my lack of ability to draw neatly on an iPhone.

Let’s just watch it once. Both angles.
Option football is all about making you see things that aren’t there. Creating illusion and confusion. So take a moment and just watch.
Is it zone read? Is it a keep? A give? A RPO?
The answer is yes. Let’s take a look why.

The answer is yes. Let’s take a look why.
This is a zone read with a bubble, hard reading the slot defender. Some call it an RPO, some call it a triple option variant. What’s important to understand is there are potentially 3 ball carriers. HB, QB, Z.
Green is the ZR read key. Yellow is bubble read key. Kmet wrap block.

Let’s look at a better angle and focus on the line. True 1 gap zone blocking. They are going to combo the down linemen up to the LBs. “Bracket on 56 with wrap on outside and combo inside as he will react to who gets ball. They can do this because they have 2 unblocked read keys.
Here’s the actual ZR read. 94 is shading and it’s a clear as day give. Hips and shoulders square to QB path. It’s not debatable. I’m sorry, but anyone who tells you different is flat wrong. This is after 2 steps and read is made. Nall’s hips are even with 10 so he’s committed.
So knowing what we just saw in depth let’s rewatch a few times. This play goes wrong when the RT and RG fail to secure the DL before “comboing” to the LB. The DL ends up in the mesh and blowing up the play.
It looks open because the 2nd read key (nickel) commits to bubble.

I hope this makes sense and clears up confusion. Option football is deceptive by design.
I encourage you all to let someone who has spent 15 years playing/coaching in systems where ZR, midline and veer (triple) option are day one concepts explain it, not some blog boy(s).
