The stars aligned today and as one of my classmates went to hug another, coffee was knocked over onto one laptop, frying it. Here's a
on why self-providing college students should receive stimulus checks and a tidbit on UBI.

First, college students didn't receive stimulus checks even if they were unclaimed on their parent's taxes and under the age of 23.
Yes, I know students are eligible to receive their stimulus checks on their return, but the burden of filling out taxes correctly and a cumulative 10 months of delay is not meaningless. https://thecollegepost.com/college-students-stimulus-benefits/
Next, to quote this exceptionally written article talking about UBI, "Money is the currency of urgency. People need it right now". https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2021-01-04/guaranteed-income-gains-popularity-after-covid-19?sref=U0wOqcqE&utm_source=morning_brew
For what happened today, the blame, if you can call it that, is on a 30-year-old college student with a newborn. Not only are clinical graduate students being throttled by accumulating debt, but accidents happen, life happens. Cars breakdown, electricity bills fluctuate, etc.
Yes, some people will abuse UBI, but when you look at the majority, the literature supports it being actively used for debt, food, and housing. Let alone decreases in overall anxiety and stress, which I will save the thread on how deleterious those can be.
So, while incredibly anecdotal, the needs of graduate students taking on debt should not be burdened by the inevitabilities of life compounded by an old system.
