Thread: Developing Hurling Skills & Conditioning concurrently. This will be very long. But some practical animated games included near the end too. If you are a hurling fundamentalist wedged into doing things the way you always did them - jump out now and we can’t fall out😉...
...Hurling needs training for hurling. Hurling as a sport is in the midst of a crazy time prep wise and talking to coaches many are confused about where to go. on one hand you have the traditionalists who use isolated drills, backs & forwards and challenge games to prepare.then..
... you have a move towards using football conditioning games and such like. I’m not sure all the answers are there either. the answer is somewhere in the middle most likely.

but hurling coaches are going to have to go the extra mile, they will have to challenge themselves...
... and learn more about tactical approaches, deliberate practice and a more games based approach. and a GBA can’t be a games for the sake of games approach, well it can, but your team won’t reach their potential and your strategies will take longer to embed. the strategy....
... of many coaches across many sports is to let matches sort out the issues. while friendlies and challenge games are critical it is very sub optimal approach to development tojust rely on them. they should be just a barometer to see how well your training practice is going....
... What can go and what can we keep from the old traditional ways? well we have to lose excessive isolated training and drills for “touch”. I have yet in all my life to see a drill that in any way resembles the “touch” needed in a game. play the game or mini variations of the...
...game and get the touch in that way. there is amazing resistance to this in hurling of all sports, it’s deeply rooted. however one approach I always take is “what happens when you take it out?”. my experience is at the very worst, nothing gets worse, but 99% of the time ....
.... things improve vastly as you put your time into practices that need work. Doing unopposed shooting drills all week at training and being confused on a Sunday why the lads/ladies are hitting 40% might be a sign for you to re-assess Another thing practiced alot still is
... isolated hooking and blocking.1) there is far less hooking and blocking in the game now anyway and 2) if you want to practice it play games where striking takes place, their is a defensive joker (so an overload of defensive players.....
... at all times) and reward hooks and blocks - every one is worth a point and the losers clean up the gear after training, or sing an ABBA song - watch intensity go up!! If a player wants to work on a weakness in an isolated way on their own that’s absolutely fine, but ....
....for competent players beyond puberty using isolated drills in training is nearly always time wasted. If they want to practice it let them come early to training and do it unopposed, but then training needs to test it, iterate their learning. Because hitting a ball off a....
...wall makes you better at hitting a ball off a wall. And i don't care what TJ Reid says about that😉

What is helpful is challenge games and in-house games to see how your training is going - but it should not be a replacement for training. yes players love to play the ...
... game, but a coach doesn’t have to give a player everything they want either not to mention creating some hunger for games is a great coaching skill. your training sessions need to be challenging and engaging and heavily game based anyway to make big strides, so that .....
.... should satisfy the players to some degree. now to the move towards football conditioning. there is of course some benefits to this, however I do believe we need to be careful here. Football conditioning games have a lot of running and hand passing in them because there ...
.... is a lot of that in the game. so both sports need to be acutely aware of that for skill development and representation of the actual game. I am seeing more football games in hurling sessions being shared etc
But one thing that’s missing in many is striking. the act of striking is very prevalent in hurling obviously and to build patterns of play close to the game we want to improve. Another factor is Pitch spacing is drastically different between hurling and football....
Remember we are conditioning our movement and brain as well in that. so if we spend 15-20 mins playing conditioning games that have little or no striking then we have an issue. Here is a game i use in hurling to develop conditioning, wide play, short space play, GK’ing & shooting
I call it the Ajax game because thats where i found it and this isn't even a true copy, i adjusted for hurling. I have also used it in football, soccer and hockey. play it 4:4 on:off and you will definitely help your conditioning without hurting your hurling...
... while learning from the best teams is important it’s also important to distinguish between elite and sub elite. The gap between Inter County and club is widening. Tech-tact-physically. there are a lot of coaches out there searching to find out what.....
Linerick, Waterford and Galway are doing for instance. but watching county finals this year and the All Ireland series it was confronting the gap that now exists. We must remember the players YOU have. this Limerick side have it at both ends, bottom up, top down. Club coaches ...
...need different solutions. Here is one such solution I designed.
And another variant, this time the game in the middle is actually connected to the PO practice going on, and the 3v3/4v4 at either end.
