So, professors tend to do two things while teaching these courses: teach the material, and get students used to “math language”
The latter has problems and isn’t well standardized IMO. As such, in classes like real analysis, students are “thrown into the water” in order to both learn the material and how to approach higher mathematics
As such, such courses are universally known to be hellish. One professor told me that it is normal for a 70% to be a B.
This puts huge stress on students and hits them hard. Professors know this since they went through something similar, but they generally think of it as a “rite of passage”
I think it is toxic when a professor writes that they chose a more difficult text because they want their students not to be spoiled
