In 2012 while running the Leeds half marathon I struggled with my breathing at mile 8, been asthmatic I did think anything of it, walked a bit, then carried on.
In 2013 I ran my first two marathons. During the winter months I did get tight chested, but hey I am asthmatic...
In april 2014 during a night shift I felt unwell during the early hours, a quick coffee and sit down I felt better, the following night I was struggling with my breathing again, to the extent I was sent to our local hospital to get checked out, the words 50 year old....
and breathing difficulties rang alarm bells with the hospital staff, an ECG done, instructions to chew this aspirin and spray this liquid under my tongue and I was blue lighted to York...
Lots of tests followed then by been moved onto cardiac care unit...
wired up to a monitor...
The next day the cardiologist came round and said further investigation was needed, 'do you suffer physically' was a question I was asked...
"Not really I replied, I ran 2 marathons last year" ...
"Oh" was the reply from Dr. Crooks...
An angiogram was done, which found...
3 severely blocked arteries, so I was told I would be having coronary artery bypass surgery...
Also there was damage to my heart muscle, which indicated I had previously had a small heart attack...
Indications probably relating to breathing difficulties on the Leeds half...
The surgery went well, a few minor complications, but I can't complain, the care I was given while in hospital was fantastic...
The follow up rehab programme was also good, although I did get told off for trying too hard...
While in hospital, out of boredom...
I entered the ballot for the following years London marathon, as you do...
In October I had to have a chat with the rehab team...
I had secured a place in the marathon...
Could I run it...?
Do you want to run it...?
Yes of course...!
Well you answered your own question then...
Lots of training, lots of self doubt, quite a few tears...
But in the april of 2015 I was in Greenwich park, with thousands of over runners including my running buddy @gaynor_brennan
I finished the marathon...
Something that would have not been possible without...
the support of my family, friends and the @NHSEngland
While training I had started running @ponteparkrun, I have made some great friends through @parkrunUK , I quickly became known as the cardiac runner at Pontefract...
I have come a long way since 2014...
Lots of mileage in the years since...
Without the @NHSEngland and @YorkTeachingNHS York district and Selby @HullHospitals Castle Hill
I would not be here...
I can't knock @NHSEngland
Anyway it had to be said...
