THREAD: For months advocates have been calling for BC to collect race-based data about #COVID19.
Data from other jurisdictions proves differential impacts on marginalized communities
I dug into what we know on Vancouver Island for @CapitalDailyVic https://cutt.ly/Jjx7V9T

Cases are on the rise again in Central Vancouver Island, many in FN communities. This is not info we get from the province, but from FNs themselves.
We can’t conclusively say which communities are disproportionately impacted bc the province refuses to collect that data.

Everything we know comes from observation.
E.g.: experts say in Victoria, refugees and immigrant women who work in healthcare are
a) at greater risk of contracting #COVID19,
b) don’t have the same supports as others, so can’t do things like take sick days.

It’s easy to blame these groups for a rise in cases when there’s no data to prove how the intersections of poverty and racism combine to make them more susceptible to catching #COVID19, and also to experience more hardships than their white counterparts due to restrictions

E.g. re: cases in South Asian communities in Lower Mainland:
“The finger is being pointed at them for making supposed choices that run counter to public health guidelines—when what is really happening is that they’re unable to stop working,” said Dr. Karen Kobayashi.

An examination of race-based cases on Vancouver Island might reveal similar trends,—like possibly in Port Alberni, as explained in this article—answer why cases are rising in these communities, and lead to a solution.

But so far, everything we know about how racial minorities on Vancouver Island have been affected by the pandemic come from FN communities, experts and support workers on the ground, and the results of one survey conducted back in May 2020.

Finally, this is a story I’ve wanted to dive into for a while
The differential impacts of COVID-19 on racial minorities have been discussed in the Lower Mainland but not to the same extent on Vancouver Island
Thanks @CapitalDailyVic for allowing me the time it took to do this.
