We know that you have some questions & concerns about the HRTP funding opportunity announced on Friday. We want to address some of those in this thread. You’ll have an opportunity to ask more questions at an upcoming webinar about the HRTP. 1/
HRTP is part of our response to the literature & feedback that programmatic approaches to training & career development add real value & produce strong outcomes (as seen in STIHR & Institute-specific programs, e.g., KRESCENT). 2/
The Institutes have heard clearly from their communities that such a model has the potential to support career development & equip investigators to contribute to the research ecosystem. 3/
That is why the core of HRTP is about exposing trainees to mentorship in academic skillsets & beyond, including science communication, KT, grant writing, project management, etc. 4/
We are committed to supporting ECRs, and the most obvious way we continue to do this is through equalizing success rates in the Project competition. But we also saw an opportunity to incorporate support for ECRs in what is a training support program. 5/
By intentionally funding salaries for ECRs and trainees as part of HRTP, we hope to free them up to engage more fully in research, while also providing ECRs with opportunities to receive & provide mentorship and gain leadership skills. 6/
We recognize that ECRs need opportunities to grow their careers in their own right, & that is why the FO is explicit that each HRTP platform must have ECRs serving as a principal applicant & as mentors. 7/
Through the HRTP, ECRs will be embedded in supportive communities working in discrete fields of research, thereby feeding the pipeline of health researchers and positioning the next generation of scientists to advance the work of their mentors. 8/
We know this doesn’t answer all your questions & and we welcome your feedback through the Contact Centre, your UDs & social media—and look forward to hearing your thoughts, @ACECHR_ACCSDC. 9/
What we want you to take away from this is that our Institutes have banded together to invest in what we hope will be a new & innovative way to support the development of the next generation of health researchers, as the CIHR Act calls for us to do. 10/
This is a pilot and we intend to learn a great deal from it about how best to support trainees—and your continued feedback will help us get this right. Thank you. 11/
