Cuba Is currently going through a monetary change. The process is called "Tarea ordenamiento" this process is meant to phase out the CUC$ (Convertible cuban peso) and to also reorder the economy and price system to be more equal for all Cubans.
The monetary change was done in order to eliminate the dollar economy that had been created in Cuba when the convertible peso was established. This system saw the rise of many contradictions and inequalities between people in the nations tourism industry and everyday workers.
When the convertible peso was introduced it was meant as a way to allow tourists and foreign investors to bring money into the island using a currency that was fixed to the price of the dollar.

This basically created 2 separate economies, one for $, one for Cuban pesos
Although it was meant as a way to stimulate more investment and growth in the economy, the negative social and economic affects led to many petitions and calls from the public for a solution to these contradictions.
People began to complain about these inequalities and so the government devised a plan to unite the 2 currency system into what was before, the single currency: The Cuban Peso (CUP)
The convertible peso ($) was eliminated on January 1, with a grace period of 6 months for people to change their currencies. Now all prices are in the standard Cuban Peso, state and personal buisness.
The monetary change has also seen the the raising of salaries across the island for all professionals and workers. On January 1, most people saw a salary bump of about 1000-1500 ($40-60) in their paid wages.
My grandmother for example was being paid 360 pesos (14$) for her retirement, now she is being paid 1,638 pesos (65$) per month
Most people are supportive of the change because of the lack of available products that were faced in state stores due to the fact that farmers preferred to sell to the private buyers because they would pay more.
This has led to the state paying farmers more to compete with private buyers, and also to the creation of price inspectors on the island to insure that private vendors aren't selling at abusive rates.
The monetary change is an ongoing process and it has generally been received well by the population, with the support of the parties leadership and representatives, Cuba 🇨🇺 is building a more equal system of monetary exchange for it's people.
