Thread: Why Phonte is one of my favorite rappers of all time.
I started listening to Phonte about 6 years ago and he quickly became one of my favorites. An incredible rapper/singer with one of the most consistent discographies, full of quality music.
The first time I heard Phonte was the song “Hiding Place” by his group, Little Brother. I was huge on Elzhi at the time and looking for any music from him I could find which lead me to this song. Elzhi and Phonte going back and forth was crazy.
So I instantly checked out the whole Minstrel Show album and got hooked on Little Brother. The Minstrel Show became one of my favorite albums ever with the amazing production from 9th Wonder and the dope chemistry between Phonte and Big Pooh. Amazing album.
Phonte's lyricism and smooth delivery on The Minstrel Show is really incredible. So many top tier verses from him on this album “Lovin it”... “Hiding Place”... “Watch Me” etc. Then his verse on “All For You” is one of my favorite ever, such a personal and honest verse.
His verse on “Lovin It”. One of 9th wonders best beats and Phonte just goes off.
Then I had to go back and check out their debut album, The Listening.

Great production, good chemistry and excellent lyricism with relatable subject matter. This also quickly became one of my favorite albums.
This album is Phonte and Pooh detailing their lives at the time. The Song “Speed” sums it up perfectly. Being in their early 20's trying to balance working stressful jobs, being a father while also trying to be successful with their music. Phonte is amazing on this song.
Phonte delivers verse after verse with great lyricism and in such a unique way that makes you feel like you know him personally. My favorites are “The Way You Do It”... “The Get Up”... “For You”... “Speed”... “Away From Me”. I Highly recommend this album.
And his verse on “Whatever You Say” is just crazy. He spits an entire verse that doesn’t even rhyme, yet still sounds great and you don’t even realize until he says it at the end of the verse. Amazing.
This album is when I realized Phonte was becoming one of my favorites. Amazing verses with a great sense of humour and relatable subject matter. What also made me a fan is that he doesn’t pretend to be someone he’s not. He’s very honest in his music and his music feels genuine.
After this I went through the rest of Little Brother’s catalog including their album "Getback” and their “Chitlin Circuit" mixtapes etc. These projects aren’t as consistent as their first 2 albums but all of them are pretty good have some of my favorite LB songs.
I personally love “Getback” but I can understand why it doesn’t get as much attention as “The Minstrel Show” or “The Listening” as it’s their first album after 9th Wonder left the group and some people weren’t really feeling the change in production.
But this album does have some great music and has one of my top 5 favorite Little Brother songs “Dreams”.

Phonte’s verse on this is really perfect. He has this talent of saying very simple lines that just make you think.

“Do you really wanna win or just look good losing?”
The Chitlin Circuit mixtapes have some gems like “What You Do”.... “On and On”... “Tension”... “War” all have some of my absolute favorite Phonte verses. My favorite song from the mixtapes is “I See Now” which has one of my favorite Kanye features and an insane verse from Phonte.
“when it come to my ex dames?
I keep 'em in-line like rollerblades at the X-Games”
My favorite Phonte verse of all time from “Deeper” off their “Separate But Equal” mixtape. Everything about this verse is incredible. The flow, the wordplay and lyricism. Insane.

“Phonte still burning it, rhymes so ahead of his time
I reminisce and see future occurrences”
After going through all of Little Brother's discography they became my second favorite hip hop group of all time behind Wu-Tang. So I had to check out the other work Phonte has done.
Phonte formed a group called “The Foreign Exchange” with a producer from The Netherlands called Nicolay and they dropped an album called Connected in 2004.
The group name actually comes from how they put the album together. Nicolay was in The Netherlands and they worked with each other on this project through email. They didn’t meet until after the album was done.
“Connected” is another excellent album in Phonte's discography. This album has some R&B on it as well as hip hop and shows that Phonte is more than just a rapper, he’s a good singer too. You need to hear this album if you haven’t already.

Phonte's verse on “Nic's Groove”
Phonte and Nicolay have some great albums under “The Foreign Exchange” although after “Connected” their albums are much less hip hop focused and more R&B and Electronic. Still definitely worth checking out.
These albums just show how incredibly talented Phonte really is. A great Hip Hop artist and a great R&B artist too.
Phonte has 2 solo albums where he blends both of these talents. “Charity Starts At Home” and “No News Is Good News”.

Again these are both just great albums with so much honesty and relatable music. Check them both out if you haven’t.
“Charity Starts At Home” is Phonte really showcasing all his talents.

Relatable songs like “The Good Fight” and “Everything Is Falling Down” and songs where he just raps his ass off like “Not Here Anymore”... “We Go Off”... etc.

Another great album.

“Dance In The Reign”
“No News Is Good News” is a short but very good album from Phonte. A very personal and mature project from him.
I love this whole album, it’s really just Phonte at his best again.

My favorite tracks are “Cry No More” and this song “Sweet you” which actually samples the song “Sweeter Than You” from the second Foreign Exchange album.
Phonte and Pooh made a come back with Little Brother dropping “May The Lord Watch” in 2019. I was super excited when they announced they were coming back and I wasn’t disappointed. A very solid album and I think it pleased most Little Brother fans.
Phonte's verse on “All In A Day” is one of the best verses from 2019.

“Just work, cause well-oiled machines don't grind
Thin line between novel versus novelty
My rate of jewels per verse is just perverse”
So overall Phonte is one of my favorites because he’s such a talented rapper and singer, his music is very relatable, he does it such a unique way and it’s very honest.
