Good morning twitter. I am Wayward, I've been streaming since occupy. I've been in Minneapolis, Baltimore, passed through Ferguson, and was at capitol seige yesterday. I have a basic set up but am upgrading. This is a thread inspired by @ChasHundley asking about gear. 1/
Let's start off with super basic stuff. What do I record with. I use a Samsung s20+ ultra phone. Top tier on market, leased. I started with an iPhone 4s back in 2012, and stay current when I can. I have an Amazon basics mono pod(20 bucks) and a RetiCam phone bracket 2/
The RetiCam phone bracket is solid metal and won't break during intense moments like the plastic ones will. You can find it on Amazon or in a camera store sometimes. (20ish dollars also) I have an otter box phone case due to nature of work, I had phones knocked out of my hand 3/
The mono pod I carry can extend to 6ft and get nice Ariel shots of crowds, or over a police officer trying to block your shot. I also usually have up to (3) 10,000 MaH external battery packs on me, plus several cables. I use the Anker brand pretty exclusively. They dont fail 4/
As you see, I also usually carry a pack of cigarettes. If you don't have this habit, good keep it thatt way. It helps me relax, but I pay for it. Also pictured in here is a rain cover for a dslr. I haven't used it with this set up. 5/
The next things I carry, is this black taticle fanny pack. My monopod can sit outside slung through top when packed. I have a set of head phones, an inhaler for emergency, nasal allergy meds, 3 lighters minimum, a speaker, spare covid mask, smart watch(usually worn), 6/
Within this rolled out pouch, which I got from someone who followed my work in Philly( thanks again) has 3 usb-c cables, 2micro USB cables, plus watch charger and 1 wall outlets. Also pictured here is a spent "Skat" round(thanks @JuniperLSimonis for phrase) from police 7/
Something I've recently had to add into my gear list. This is lacrosse kidney and spine protection. I went years without actively feeling the need for personal protection. On nov14 the proud boys stabbed 3 people here in dc. This was my solve until I got a Vest. 8/
It is a hard ABS plastic outside, with a bit of cushion. I use it outside of protests to do medieval fighting. I am on left. We use Ratan which is a type of grass, similar to bamboo but solid. Basically a giant stick. This vest does wonderfully to block that from hurting 9/
This is my handy dandy true personal protection gear. This face mask is about 55 dollars on Amazon, its the JJKK respirator @magpiekilljoy talks in her gas and goggles episode. Highly reccomend the whole series. Lots to absorb and take away. 10/ https://open.spotify.com/episode/34OtvWWk95CBcCWkNPSSCq?si=gbBjLKqYTlaXPL7nOiwVjw
This helmet is just your basic skate helmet. I lost the buckle like day one, and now it's held on with the slide adjuster and a Caribeaner. Helps protect from objects thrown, and strikes. Anything not to get my skull cracked. Traumatic Brain Injuries are often ignored. 11/
When all packed up. It is really minimalistic. My backpack contains mask and helmet, rain cover clips on to a bag, and kidneys worn. I sling black tactocle fanny pack across back and roll. Mono pod through the loop and it shifts to where comfortable. 12/
Alot of journalists develop thier own style based out of need. Some need camera equipment and roll with different bags, some can step back and shoot, but as a front liner usually I go with minimalizing the space I take up. Use what I need and leave dead weight. 13/
As mentioned above though, I am adding a lvl IV plates, carrier, and looking into ballistic helmets to change gear load. With increased risks I'd rather get ahead of curve ball, than to get hurt not. Thanks for reading. 14/14
