It wasn't until @wilw_writes liked this just the other day that I realized I never responded. Apologies, world being as it is and all that. Just wanted to add that this follows a couple of simultaneous conversations recently and I feel like I want to pull some threads together. https://twitter.com/passerkirbius/status/1332562726430728193
First, this is super relevant and important. Stormfire Productions would not be in the position to offer a production partnership if it weren't for our Patreon funds, looking forward into the future of the work we want to support beyond Kalila.
We are currently working on ads, something that is new for the third season. And we are, of course, tapped into @WGAAudio to keep an understanding of how to handle the other aspects of "scaling up" should big money come our way.
Stormfire Productions is focused on supporting indie, with indie funds/influence grown by Kalila's moderate success. That model is only sustainable if we're thoughtful about how we engage with creators and future investors. @EditrixW and I working on that.
I would love to see more folks pick up our model, which is to flat out offer money and production to up and coming writers. That said, we're still experimenting on how sustainable that is. We're talking with our peers about processes and structures and yeah, finances.
And, of course, listening to others is key. @ShoMarq had a great thread about "rising tides". Stormfire Productions is only accessible and sustainable on the indie scale. We aren't at union rates yet. As bigger companies get into the audio drama scene, we can't compete.
So our priority is on those people and stories who are more likely to get left behind, and working in concert with those who are trying to make sure fewer people get left behind in bigger production funding and grants.
That means that the efforts behind WGA Audio Alliance is important, and so are those who are already tapped into industry. We need more people advocating to flat out give money and POWER to marginalized creators, not just platforms.
I've learned in anti-racism and dialogue training is that often (white) people who have influence downplay it. They don't think they DO have the ability to advocate effectively to TPTB, which is usually untrue. They just need to learn and use the power they already have.
Long story short, all of these conversations must continue and they should also be a part of actions associated with funding productions. Art is already devalued, we need to act like there is value here...because there is.
