Welcome back to session Senator @clarketucker and @RepTippi33! Arkansas @momsdemand looks forward to working with you. We’re keeping a close eye on the Stand Your Ground bill. AR already has a strong self defense law and there’s no proof it’s not working. #EndGunViolence #ARLeg
In Florida, their similar Stand Your Ground law has been associated with a 32% increase in firearm homicide rates. At least 30 people nationwide are killed each month as a result of Stand Your Ground laws.
Stand Your Ground also has a disproportionate impact on communities of color. When white shooters kill Black victims, the resulting homicides are deemed justifiable 11 times more frequently than when the shooter is Black and the victim is white.
This isn’t about expanding the rights of law-abiding gun owners. In FL, nearly 60% of those who claimed Stand Your Ground had been arrested at least once before the day they killed someone.
About 1/3 of those had been accused of violent crimes, including assault, battery, or robbery.
