If you asked 16 yr olds who just finished school to name a successful black person pre-slavery or a black inventor, how many would actually be able to give an answer?
I can only remember learning about Rosa Parks, MLK Jr, Malcolm X and Olaudah Equiano personally. Coming out of school thinking white people did all the smart things and then black people were slaves/second class citizens makes it so easy for people to be susceptible to racist
rhetoric. I really do think it breeds a subconscious white supremacy. Most people who are racist really believe that they aren’t. Would it really be that hard to have even just a few weeks of teaching on black inventors of the 19th & 20th century? The Mali Empire and Mansa Musa
who was the richest man ever? Zera Yacob who was a 17th century philosopher who pre-dated the enlightenment on a lot of ideas about God and ethics? The Kuba Kingdom in the 16th century that had a constitution, a tiered legal system, trial by jury, taxation and a police force?
