What’s the personal cost of the current #ResearchCulture? Our new #ReimagineReport couldn’t be clearer:

@WellcomeTrust spoke to 760 people across the UK research community. Here's a short thread on what they told us 👇
Working with @HK_London and 9 host institutions, we held a series of Townhalls as a community consultation.

We wanted to understand:

✅ People's individual experiences of #ResearchCulture
✅ The effect this was having
✅ The changes they wanted to see
Across those conversations, we heard a great deal of agreement on the frustrations & injustices of the current research environment.

12 challenges emerged 👇
And lots of ideas for overcoming them 📝
After joining all the events, I'm left with 3 conclusions:

1⃣ We need to 👉create👈 structures & systems that reward the activities & behaviours that we all see as valuable contributions.

Being a great manager takes time and energy, which should be incentivised.
2⃣ We need to 👉communicate👈 in a clearer, more targeted way so that everyone knows where to seek support or raise grievances.

Tellingly, many of the ideas raised already exist in one form or another, reminding us that new initiatives are only part of the solution.
3⃣ We need to rebuild people’s 👉confidence👈 in institutions and approaches.

Many people told us about their lack of trust in areas such as the handling of complaints, and a belief that the system isn’t built on fairness.
And finally, a big thank you to the huge team who made these Townhalls happen – our hosts, helpers and @HK_London.

This report is another step towards our shared goal, but not the end of the conversation. Follow me for lots more from @WellcomeTrust in the months ahead!
