Do the people constantly screaming ever stop to read or think? I know, rhetorical question.

Anyway, a thread on Section 230. 1/9
Section 230 of the 1996 Telecommunications Act:

“No provider or user of an interactive computer service shall be treated as the publisher or speaker of any information provided by another information content provider.” 2/9
Section 230 protects social media companies from being liable for what their users post. Without 230 they would essentially have to cease operations or heavily censor what people post. When people want to terminate 230, it's not because they want more free speech. 3/9
Take Parler. People are upset that Parler has been exiled from AWS. They exiled Parler because they didn't want to be liable for their platform being used to organize an insurrection against the United States. Without 230 Big Tech would be liable for much smaller offenses. 4/9
Parler said they wanted free speech. Their secret business model was the opposite of free speech. Without other users knowing, you could buy your way to being an influencer on their platform. They built a platform for paid speech. 5/9 https://twitter.com/donk_enby/status/1346565749977051136
Parler said they wanted to build a platform for privacy. Yet they never scrubbed Exif data or other personal information from their site. They didn't protect their user data. They didn't even delete your posts when you thought they id. 6/9 https://twitter.com/bitburner/status/1348560153302351873
If you believed you were anonymous when you wrote anything on Parler in support of an armed insurrection of the United States, congratulations Stupid. You have won a future visit from the FBI. 7/9
When you sign up for social media, you agree to a terms of service (TOS). If you break those terms, by harassing other users or inciting violence, they can suspend your account. It's what you signed up for when you joined the service. 8/9
One last note to those of you who encouraged your users to delete Twitter, and now think your follower count falling must be censorship: You fell out of the stupid tree and hit every branch on the way down, didn't you? 9/9
