I've finally realized why I've always hated the term "Trump supporters." We never said "Bush supporters" or "Obama supporters," we said "Republicans" and "Democrats." "Trump supporter" is a neat parlor trick purposefully used to disguise a truth. They're Republicans.
And we're still doing it, evident in our inability to coalesce around a name for "last Wednesday" - when Republicans attempted a coup in D.C. We've tried to pretend for over 4 years that Trump ≠ the Republican Party. That's objectively false, but it does very important work.
What work does it do? Allows Biden to say he wants to be "bipartisan." Allows the NYT to soft-pedal white supremacy by pretending "not all Republicans are like that." Allows our mayor here in Tulsa, @gtbynum, to pretend he's progressive even as he continuously enables fascism.
Qanon is a Republican movement. Militias are Republican movements. White evangelicals are a Republican movement. Tie-wearing doughy-soft old white men in khakis are, at this point, a Republican front. CALL THEM ALL BY THEIR NAME: REPUBLICAN.
The morning after the coup attempt, the President called in to the RNC - and was loudly cheered by his party. Last Wednesday was the responsibility of an American political party and it's name is Republican.
It was Republicans on the capitol steps, Republicans who dragged out a cop and killed him with an American flag, Republicans who dressed like a shaman and danced behind the dais, Republicans who invaded Pelosi's office and walked off with a podium - Republicans.
as this thread is going viral, here's a link to my favorite charity - please donate to PFLAG which, unlike any other LGBT group, has always committed to having boots on the ground in almost every single American city https://pflag.salsalabs.org/supportpflag/index.html
