During the 18th century, heads of convicted traitors were frequently mounted on pikes from the roof. In 1878, it was dismantled and its stones numbered. In 1880 the monument was purchased by brewer Henry Meux, who transported and re-erected the arch as a gatehouse for his (2/3)
