Yesterday I went past local Catholic Church as what appeared to be hoards of people were leaving. It felt totally out of place with how life looks most of the time & made me feel almost anxious.

I *don’t* agree that places of worship being exempt from lockdown...
... but I accept that’s where we are.

Anyway, I emailed the church with my concerns and said now odd & uncomfortable it felt to see so many people in one place, and all walking out to cars in car park.
Feel disappointed to have received a reply pointing out that what they were doing was legal, and that they were below permitted numbers (72) in the chapel and that the car park (33 spaces) wasn’t full.
This totally missed my point.

Just because we can do something in law, it doesn’t mean we should.

We need to be minimising social contact regardless of legislation.

And be sensitive to how unsettling it is to walk past a lot of people now, even if they are social distanced.
But more broadly,
1. how can keeping churches open be justified?
2. How can (some) church leaders justify putting on services even if they are permitted?
3. How do individual worshippers justify their attendance?
Finally: to clarify, I really do understand how important collective worship is to many people.

My point is that we all have to make sacrifices. The greater good is what needs to guide us right now, even though it’s hard. #personalethics #lockdownuk
