Would be sad if Bryony Frost has been having issues in weigh room. While rows behind those doors are nothing new, you are more isolated as a woman . And if true, it undoubtedly stems from jealousy because of the profile that has come with success as a female jockey
Would be sad if Bryony Frost has been having issues in weigh room. While rows behind those doors are nothing new, you are more isolated as a woman . And if true, it undoubtedly stems from jealousy because of the profile that has come with success as a female jockey
It is a profile that is disproportionate to similar achievements for male riders. Jane Mangan, Rachael Blackmore and Hollie Doyle have spoken about it, though it's more difficult for latter duo as you don't want to appear unappreciative of awards/coverage/opportunities that come
Hollie Doyle @IRYOfficial "now I have broken through, I am getting attention due to my sex. I am shocked that so and so’s done what I’ve done, but never gets mention. I perhaps had to work harder being a girl but on flip side, if your hard work pays off, you get more attention.”
Harry Cobden, Bryony's ex +Paul Nicholls #1, where Bryony is #2, said in Times recently. “If cameras weren’t involved would she have gone as far as she has? I don’t know. But she has managed it really well, especially last year because Bryony Frost was the face of jump racing.”
Now Harry tries to shun limelight, has no desire for it, and is ultra successful. But if you're a journeyman and you feel resentful of that, I can imagine it shining through. But what people forget is the journey to get to a place where there may be an actual inverse bias.
Because nothing is in your favour as a girl starting out wanting to be a jockey. You have to overcome countless biases and bigotry, sly comments and dodgy remarks. Sot it is imperative to trumpet the shattering of glass ceilings.
There is sometimes too much self-congratulation though and using of the girls I think for promotion, a mix of apology and look how great a sport we are. It's a lot of pressure. It suits Bryony's personality but we've all heard to kickback to that (self-publicist etc).
But life is all about using whatever advantages you have, if you have them, and being a female jockey, there aren't many, and that only comes after you've gotten some success. Even then, you have to be able to ride. I could easily see jealousy festering. Hope it's stamped down
