Short True Story

I was standing by the airport check-in counter when i overheard 2 men who were discussing of being strategic in their biz but what they said afterwards, it wasn't strategic.

Guy 1: "We need to do something strategic"
Guy 2: "Like what?"
Guy 1: "Take a break!"
It should be safe to say that all business leaders are positive that they have a strategy

Most times, however what they pass of as a strategy is actually a tactical marketing plan or an operational plan.
Being Strategic 🆚 Being Tactical 🆚 Being Operational

These are very different layers of management and leadership that should not be confused with each other.

Let me explain!
◾Being Operational

These are things you do everyday.

- Sending/receiving of emails
- Manufacturing of a product
- Advertising a product
- Sales process

You are executing on a daily basis.
◾Being Tactical

You are taking a step back.

You have seen what your competitors are doing and how you can position yourself better BUT in the Short-term.
◾Being Strategic

Takes a long time to do.

Takes a long time to conceptualize.

Takes a long time to implement.

Let's give it a test!⬇
You have a new product you want to take to the market.

🔹You need to engage new customers
🔹You need to engage customer insight
🔹You need to conduct customer research
🔹You need to know how to reach the customers
1⃣ Operational plan
- Designing a website or Logo

2⃣ Tactical plan
- Asking questions like:

How are you going to reach your customers?

What's your distribution marketing channel?

Are you going to use partners or you're going solo?
3⃣Strategic plan

❔ How is the product going to look and how's the look of the product going to affect the pricing of the product?

❔ How is the pricing of the product going to affect how you position it in the market?
❔ If you understand all of your competitors and their positioning, where's your specific product going to be positioned?
Key Elements in building a biz strategy:

Customer drivers (emotional, physical, social needs)

Channel drivers (how can you distribute your offers)

Company capabilities (what factors allow your biz to stand apart)

Competitive drivers (trends affecting your market)
If you are not excited about your own Strategic plan for your biz then don't expect your team to be.

If you don't have a well thought through prepared strategy then don't expect your team to know where you are going.
