GOI should seriously consider an open source Atmanirbhar App Store that Google/Apple should comply with to implement security (& sovereignty) protocols. These are things one can afford to do with a population of 1.3bn people, soon to be the 3rd largest economy in the World. https://twitter.com/balajis/status/1348534280591265792
It goes well beyond security. Apple/Google policies are entirely discretionary, more so in India. They aren't even adequately staffed to serve here! Numerous cases of Indian apps being taken off the store for vague reasons with no recourse. Add to this opaque search/advertising.
The App Store Economy itself is worth more than half a trillion dollars (Apple); how can 1 company gate that? Likewise, with Google. And given these companies have competing apps, how can they be trusted to regulate? You saw the recent case of @dhh/ @heyhey. Many other cases, too.
Indian entrepreneurs who are creating value should not have to kowtown to regulations imposed by private corporations that neither pay taxes nor employ people here. The Government must be hawkish in its approach and use our talent/scale to good measure & negotiate better for us.
The recent security/sovereignty implications are a tipping point; there is HUGE potential for local innovation and wealth creation from being aggressive on this front.
