Ruben dos Santos Gato Dias was born in a middle class family in Lisbon in 1997.He grew up with his two sisters and a brother. At the age of 9 he was in the C.F. Estrela da Amadora academy. He started out as a striker but gradually changed it to centre back.
In 2008 he was inducted into the Benfica academy after passing the trial. He was told to play as a midfielder instead of a centre-back.He had a growth spurt in his teenage years and after that he was played as a centre back again.
His leadership abilities didn't go unnoticed in the Benfica academy and he was made the captain in every single age group he played.He was promoted to the Benfica B side in 2015 and then to Benfica's first team in 2017.
In his debut season at Benfica he was named Primeira Liga's young player of the year. He helped Benfica win the league title in the 18-19 season.He was also named in Primeira Liga's TOTY in 2019
Ruben Dias is a mainstay at centre-back for Portugal now.He helped them win UEFA Nations League 18-19 , putting in a man of the match performance in the final against Netherlands.
Dias was scouted by several of Europe's top clubs since he made his Benfica debut. On September 2020 Manchester City signed him for a club record 68 million Euros after scouting him for "several years".And oh boy! Didn't he revolutionize Man City's defence?!
In 21 matches he played he has just conceded 7 goals keeping 14 cleansheets. He brought in leadership at the back which City lacked.He's very vocal on the pitch,isn't afraid to go into tackles and throw his body on the line for a block,very dominant in the air.
He's also had a postive effect on the entire backline. He has helped in Stones' revival and when they are paired together they look unbreakable.When paired together they haven't lost a single match and have kept 7 cleansheets out of the 8 matches they have played together.
His best performance in a City shirt till date was arguably against Man Utd in the 2-0 league cup win. After the match he became emotional ,started crying and hugged his fellow partner in defence -John Stones.
