A thread on Kaguya-sama and why I love it's romance and premise.
(a bit of spoilers ahead if you havent read the manga, avoidable if you dont look at the panels)

I'm sure everyone that's heard of this series knows by now that the main premise is that the MCs want to be confessed to by the other. I've seen people say that it's a stupid premise driven by pride for the sole purpose of comedy but I disagree and will try to explain why.
Let's start with Kaguya, she's the daughter of the Shinomiya family, one of the richest families in Japan with connections pretty much everywhere. She was raised with Shinomiya group's expectations very high. As a result, she used people and found ways to benefit her family by
doing so. This results in her being wary of people and results in her "trust issues," testing people if they are worthy of her friendship. It becomes second nature to her to judge people based on how useful they will be to her. This results in her having little friends and-
becoming lonely. This leads to her cold and distant personality that many people fear and praise at the same time.
Enter Shirogane Miyuki, the man who changed kaguya's life. He was a good student that got along with everyone. Miyuki was a positive person that befriended Kaguya. He made Kaguya feel happy and special. She fell in love.
As time passed, this made Kaguya hate herself, she realized how bad of a person she was. She grew to think of how somebody like him could like a person such as her. She thinks that Miyuki only likes her because he's nice to everyone. Was she happy because of a delusion?
She can't bring herself to confess to him, she's worried that it was all a misunderstanding and that he didn't really like her. She's scared, she doesn't want to fail. She doesn't want to go back to how she was. That's why she wants to be confessed to.
Now we have Shirogane Miyuki, Miyuki was raised in an underprivileged home. Their family frequently had financial problems due to his mother leaving them at an early age. This lead to him working part-time jobs and studying extra hard to provide for their family.
He was an excellent student and got accepted into Shuchiin Academy. Although he was against it, he realized that he had to enroll there as they had no money. Miyuki realized this was a mistake eventually. Shuchiin had major prejudice against commoners like him.
He gets approached by the Student Council. He gets offered a position but due to his inferiority complex, he finds reasons to decline saying there are other people that deserve the title. The president however shows him another side to the people at Shuchiin.
He is brought to participate in a cleaning activity where an incident occurs. A volunteer fell into the swamp they were cleaning. He tries to help but he can't, desperate, he looks for somebody with the bravery to save the girl. Enter Kaguya.
Kaguya made Miyuki realize his weakness and incompetence. He realizes that status and wealth don't matter when it comes down to times of emergency. An inspiring and beautiful act committed by somebody he thought was a stubborn brat. He fell in love.
He wonders if anyone can stand beside somebody that could do such acts, and realizes that the only one is the Student Council President. He accepts the student council offer as a result.
Even after making it into the council, he was still ignored by Kaguya and she took no notice of him. With the help of other council members, he realizes that the only way he could get her to look at him, was if he was the one above her. And he proves himself by beating her.
Miyuki suffers from an inferiority complex and doesn't think of himself highly. He can't bring himself to confess to her because it would mean giving up and admitting that he would always be under her, living as someone inferior to her.
He wants Kaguya to confess to him, he wants to be treated as an equal. If somebody of the highest status can see someone from the lowest status as an equal, then his efforts were not in vein. He tried his best to gain her attention, if he were to confess, all of his hardwork
would be wasted and his struggles would have been all for naught.
I think that this is such a great romance story because confessing their love for each other would mark a significant change in both of their lives. It's not the average romance where the MCs go out just because.
