Procurement minister Anita Anand on Friday: “the numbers that we've provided take into account a number of vaccines, not only the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines.” And today... https://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/anita-anand-covid-19-vaccine-rollout-1.5867870
Here’s what she told CBC per today’s story: “Anand says Canada doesn't need to approve additional vaccine candidates to meet its goal of inoculating everyone who wants a COVID-19 shot by September.” So this puzzling.
Yes, the 60 million doses of Pfizer + Moderna could cover “everyone who wants on.” But that target date is end of 2021, not beginning (or is end?) of September. This would require a substantial acceleration of deliveries beyond what we’ve been told.
Keep in mind it takes 28 days to administer both doses of the 40 million Moderna shots on order (Pfizer is 21 days) and the challenge to complete “everyone” by September is even tougher. Or does the govt mean everyone gets their first shots by September?
Add in the lag from vaccine delivery to needle-in-arm, which is proving longer than expected, and the goal posts move even closer.
So if the government knows the bulk of the 60 million on order will have been delivered by August, I don’t get why they won’t just say that. The number of lives lost depends on timing. We ought to know when. Otherwise it looks like underpromise/overdeliver strategic comms.
