Donald Trump is a fascist. His ideology is dangerous. This is not a case of something being taken too far by his most extreme supporters. From all that he has said, we can surmise that his "most extreme supporters" are doing exactly what he wants them to do.
I'm talking about the insurrectionists on Wednesday and those who support them, not "casual Trump voters." It's these "extreme" folks who are the natural product of Trump's presidency, and there are thousands like the rioters who wish they had gone. We must call this out by name.
EVERY political protest can be taken too far. We have seen it every year in some form. Violence occurs when it wasn't supposed to. Peaceful protests turn chaotic. Do not be fooled: This is not that.
We must call out the source boldly. Especially those of us who love Jesus and know this is so far from him. We must do it for the sake of our neighbors who have been taken hostage by this destructive, evil ideology, perpetuated by a very lost, dangerous man.
I do believe there were folks present on Wednesday who didn't intend violence and didn't participate. They had the right to be there, per the 1st Amendment. But we should be worried for them, because they are listening to the same man who called the insurrectionists into battle.
Christ tells us to tell the truth and bring sin into the light. We've clearly failed because many of the Trumpists who might even die for Trump are in our pews. They've been hypnotized. Trumpism is cultish. So we can't afford being vague. We must be abundantly clear.
So to all my Christian brothers and sisters: We must name it all. We must use the words Trump, fascism, white supremacy, and Christian nationalism when we condemn Wednesday's violence. Anything less, and we are complicit as this sinful ideology spreads quietly in the shadows.
