Re: Last few RTs.

I guess that is why I am and have been so angry. Because I think of all the times I stood up, made points, argued, proposed different takes, etc., and was effectively silenced.

I think about how I heard the same from colleagues while I was still in the industry full-time, more than 10 years ago, and how I continue to hear it through my research.

I think about the DEI work I'm doing and will continue to do, and how every day it feels like an insurmountable challenge, but one I'll keep doing, because I believe media can be different. I KNOW it needs to be.
I am so angry it brings tears to my eyes every time I acknowledge it. Like right now.

I try to just tuck my feelings in, otherwise I'll never get anything done.
Whew, that's my cue to sign off.
Actually, not quite. Deleted and fixed to take my own advice: don't link to stuff you don't want to promote.
We warned y'all about giving prominence to everyday racists. And yet, here we are, @benyt. Despite the disclaimers, this is STILL a profile of a white nationalist. It's one that models the very problem media has right now.
Rather than using the incredible privilege of being the media columnist at the Times, you used this week's column to write an arm's length profile of a domestic terrorist. Why? @benyt
Sure, it's compelling. It drives traffic. It's timely. But newsworthy? Arguable.

Why not explicitly focus on how digital-first approaches to media-making, including chasing virality, is part of the calculus, and why democracy suffers because of it? @benyt
The column is a series of admissions of how you and people in your professional circle capitalized on conservative provocateurs, to the detriment of both news organizations and the general public. How is it that you were "slow to realize" this? @benyt
I'm almost certain there were more than "raised eyebrows" among members of your former staff who are JOC. Did you listen to their concerns? @benyt
I am outdone by the detailed hubris and the levels of shallow self-reflection published here for the world to see, honestly.

"I don’t cover BuzzFeed extensively in this column... The Times has required that I not do so until I divest my stock options in the company." @benyt
Perhaps, PERHAPS, this is a case study in the problem with U.S. news media today. Despite their own admissions of ineptitude and bad judgment, rich white men are *still* making editorial decisions that have tangible and enduring consequences for the rest of us. @benyt
This would have been a great week to reach back and reflect on the promises of #BlackoutTuesday, honestly. To call up a JOC you ignored or silenced during your time at @BuzzFeedNews, and to give them the space to write about what happened. @benyt
It's not too late. You are, after all, the @nytimes media columnist, a person with significant editorial scope inside the paper of record. Please, try again. That is the kind of coverage we need right now. @benyt
