Never too early to look at some key people for next season, so I'll go thread and some initial thoughts on what #Bears should do:
Start with Ted Phillips. Time to go. He shouldn't be involved in any more front office hires. You'll hear he isn't involved in football decisions, he's not involved in day-to-day decisions, but he's right next to George for big picture decisions. Can't have him involved.
Next up Ryan Pace. He cannot be in charge of another offseason after this past one. Poor contracts, several misses, went all-in and went 8-8. If Bears promote him to President, that seems crazy, but as long as he isn't involved in roster construction, I guess it'll do.
One more note on Pace- I think he does have an eye for defensive talent, but there's too many other issues at this point and way too many misses offensively and way too many poor decisions to have him in charge of this roster any longer.
Nagy is the most difficult one IMO. His players don't quit on him, he seems to have CEO qualities, he's made the playoffs twice in 3 years and has a winning record. He's not a play caller. Is it possible for George or a new FO to separate the two? It seems near impossible to me.
Mitchell Trubisky. He's not the guy, period. Can he make a great play from time to time? Sure. But that's not enough. You can blame the OL, you can blame the weapons, you can blame the play calls, you can blame scheme, but in the end, he doesn't overcome any of it-- ever.
I know the Mitch stans will argue to the end for him, but this isn't about being better than Foles, this is about being a legit top 15 QB. He isn't that and he isn't close to that. There's no point hoping he gets incrementally better because it still won't be enough.
Chuck Pagano- peace out. Way too many issues defensively. Poor matchups, rarely makes a play call to put his players in a position to succeed. He likes playing with a lead and attacking QBs but never had that opportunity really. He's not a fit. Elevate Jay Rodgers. Don't get cute
Nick Foles needs to go but unless they can somehow trade him, there's zero reason for Foles to retire and walk away from millions guaranteed. He's most likely on the roster for one more year. Bears can get out of the deal after 2021.
