Saw Pixar's Soul.
Found it extremely unsettling.
What I wanted vs what I got.

A creepy, postmodern & somewhat religious conception of the meaning of life & death. A weird pattern we're seeing a lot at Disney / Pixar lately. And damn these modern art gods are just terrifying.
The personality characteristics assigned to "souls" flirt with the Big Five.

But instead of exploring how every configuration has its place in humanity, souls are predetermined, or even condemned to traits like "selfish" or "manipulative".

What a weird message to tell kids.
The movie also just destroys the concepts of passion, dedication, performance, hard work & sacrifice.

It has a very dangerous message: carpe diem, pursuing goals isn't meaningful, focus on the present instead of the future, enjoy the little things like leaves falling from trees.
As such, it's no surprise that all the artists, inventors, philosophers, writers mentioned in the movie are just here as "mentors" inflicting a lot of psychological damage...
So yeah, of course sometimes we can get blinded by our own aspirations to the point of forgetting what's in front of us.

Yeah, the pressure of external expectations can harm psychological development.

But... This movie just rings wrong.
It feels off, in spite of its beauty.
